MESSAGES OF FİDAN AND LAVROV IN ANKARA IN THE 4TH YEAR OF THE WAR
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is holding talks in Ankara today. Lavrov is visiting Turkey on the day the war that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine has entered its fourth year.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Lavrov at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the morning.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will also receive Lavrov in Beştepe later in the day.
The talks in Ankara will mainly focus on increasing diplomatic efforts to end the war.
In addition, Fidan and Lavrov discussed Turkey-Russia relations, recent developments in Syria, the ceasefire declared after the Israel-Hamas war, and developments in the region.
Lavrov and Fidan last met on February 20 at the G-20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in South Africa.
Erdoğan also hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ankara last week.
Reuters, citing two sources whose names it did not share, reported that the Foreign Minister of the transitional administration in Syria, Assad Hassan Shaybani, will also be in Turkey today.
The news agency drew attention to the fact that the visit coincided with Lavrov's visit.
Fidan: We are ready to host the meetings
Foreign Minister Fidan and his Russian counterpart Lavrov held a joint press conference following the meeting.
Fidan said at the press conference that Turkey was ready to host possible peace talks:
"There is an initiative launched by the US that aims to end the war through negotiations. This situation coincides with the policy we have been following since the beginning of the war. We attach great importance to the new initiative as a result-oriented approach. We believe that a solution can be reached through negotiations in which both sides will participate.
"We are ready to host talks as before."
Lavrov: Ukraine not joining NATO is a condition for peace
Referring to the new traffic of talks that started under the leadership of US President Donald Trump at the joint press conference, Lavrov said, "Ukraine not joining NATO is a must," while talking about the conditions for peace.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at a press conference on Sunday that he could leave his post in return for bringing peace to his country and NATO membership.
Zelenskiy's statement came after Trump described him as a "dictator."
Lavrov argued that Trump also accepted that Ukraine's efforts to join NATO were a mistake, and said, "This war was provoked, and it was not Russia that provoked it."
The Russian Foreign Minister noted that in the negotiations held in Istanbul in 2022, it was decided that Ukraine would not become a member of NATO, that there would be no foreign military bases in the country, and that it would receive international guarantees for security, and said that these negotiations could be used as a basis for peace.
Lavrov argued that the agreement was not signed as a result of pressure from Washington, Brussels and London.
Trump announced on February 25 that the second round of the Ukraine peace talks would be held in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.BBC
