UKRAINE AND MOLDOVA START EU MEMBERSHIP NEGOTIATIONS
The Council of the European Union (EU) agreed on Friday with Ukraine and Moldova to start accession negotiations in Luxembourg on June 25.
Belgium, which holds the mandated EU presidency last week, managed to achieve the unanimity needed to approve the framework for negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova, which Hungary blocked. Friday's move forms the legal basis for the talks.
Ukraine applied to join the EU in February 2022, less than a week after the Russian invasion. EU leaders moved extremely quickly to make Ukraine a candidate in June of that year, but the process was slow thereafter.
The journey to the EU of the two countries is quite arduous.
However, the start of negotiations sends a strong signal of solidarity with Ukraine, as well as the massive financial support provided by the EU.
To join the EU, candidate countries must go through a long process to harmonize their laws and standards and meet a number of economic and political conditions, including respect for the rule of law and other democratic principles. Ukraine will have to stop deep government corruption and adopt other reforms.
This step came shortly before the next Presidency of the EU, Belgium, handed over the mandate to Hungary on July 1.
Ukraine's accession process is not included in the official EU program announced by Budapest on Tuesday. Euronews
